Is Salutogenesis a universal construct? Understanding sense of coherence within an indigenous culture

The objective of this study is to explore the core concept of salutogenesis – sense of coherence (SOC) and to understand how it is manifested in youth from a non-western culture, the Bedouin of the Negev, Israel. We will aim to understand how the different themes of SOC, manageability, comprehensibility and meaningfulness are translated into relevant ideas within unrecognized Bedouin villages.

The salutogenic model suggests that given their tendency to perceive the world as meaningful, comprehensible, and manageable, individuals with a strong SOC will be less likely to feel threatened by stressful events and hence will be better equipped to adjust to them. Youth is a vital stage of development in general,  in which SOC is developed and consolidated. Antonovsky thought of SOC in universal terms. Thus, he suggested that the salutogenic model would predict that, in all cultures, SOC could be considered as a potential protector against stress. However, most research to date on salutogenesis has been with western participants, and studies with non-western population have revealed ambiguous results. Therefore, it could be that different research methods are needed to reveal the nature of SOC among non-western cultures. The literature on research with non-western participants suggests alternative methods of research for these populations that move away from abstract western conceptualizations, such as qualitative and arts based methods which will be applied in this proposal.

Salutogenesis in schools: Does sense of coherence help teachers cope with the presence of special needs children in their classrooms?

The state of one’s mental health can be described using the novel concept of 'salutogenesis' (origin of health), which describes a continuum between “ease” and “dis-ease”. As the core concept of this model, the notion of 'sense of coherence' (SOC) plays an important role in how one perceives challenges throughout life. Thus, an individual with a strong SOC is less likely than someone with a weak SOC to perceive stressful situations as threatening and anxiety provoking. Over the last decade the concept of SOC has been extended to the realm of communities and organizations, among others. As employees and as leaders, teachers, also have the potential to influence the students in their classrooms. Research consistently shows that teachers exposed to excessive stress in the classroom harbor negative emotions toward their students, and that emotional load invariably impairs their ability to guide and support their students. It is therefore important to explore the stressful situation created by the enrollment of special-education students in regular classes without extra assistance and to evaluate the coping resources available to teachers for contending with this challenge.

The findings of our research will facilitate the design of a variety of teacher training programs, such as basic training programs at teachers' colleges. Moreover, they will enable the development of modular models designed to fit the diversity addressing specific cultural characteristics. These models could also be applied to different populations around the world.

Personal and collective resilience among commanders in the IDF: Does it contribute to resiliency and well-being of soldiers in combat units?

The study focuses on how soldiers cope when entering army life. The assumption is that commanders in the army have a strong influence on the well-being of their soldiers. A supportive commander can help a soldier through stressful situations, while an unsupportive one can be the cause of the stress. Thus, the study examines the relationships between resiliency of commanders and low ranking officers, and their soldiers' resiliency in the first six months of basic training. This direction is innovative, as research tends to focus on extreme situations such as combat or captivity and identifying PTSD. The innovative contribution of this study may be the detection of coping resources in commanders and low ranking officers which can contribute to healthy development and well-being of their soldiers when entering adulthood. The study could be a basis for models of prevention, intervention and development of personal and collective resiliency within the army units.

The Relationship between the characteristics of the Individual, Family and Community and Bullying on the School Bus in Ecological Perspective

This explores exposure to and victimization by violence during student transport to and from school. Although student transports are the main means used by students from regional councils to get to and from schools, research has hardly examined the incidence of violence during these rides.

The present research is based on the ecological model and includes a variety of resources used by the individual (family, community) as potential for adoptive coping when facing stress, conflicts and violence when riding a school bus to and from schools. The main goal of this research is to examine the way junior high school students (grades 7-9) perceive their resources in different circles of their life: the individual level – personal sense of coherence; the family level – support for autonomy from the parents and the community level – community sense of coherence and 'transportation climate'. Furthermore, this study will examine how these resources contribute to adaptive coping when facing violence during student transport. The model assumes that there will be negative correlations between the resources: personal sense of coherence, autonomy support, community sense of coherence and transportation climate and between exposure to and victimization by violence during the transport as reported by the students.
